UNBIND

2024
BRANDING

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Unbind is a social campaign created in a four-person team based on a pressing social issue. In our case we chose the topic of book censorship/bans. Many of our stories have been deemed inappropriate by various groups all across the United States. The campaign includes different aspects such as community events, physical material, and social media assets.

DEVELOPMENT

The Unbind wordmark is a design that captures the essence of its mission to combat book bans & promote intellectual freedom. Central to the design are open braces that surround and interact with the wordmark, representing confinement due to censorship and the boundaries imposed on knowledge. The Unbind lettermark’s primary element is the "U", which is framed by open bracket designed to resemble the pages of an open book.

CHALLENGES AND OUTCOME

Our final branding draws inspiration from overprint posters and torn black pages. The image of the ripped black pages symbolizes the removal of censorship, revealing personal and powerful reflections on race, identity, and diverse stories. We also updated one of our typefaces to evoke the classic look of government bureaucracy, referencing the oppressive systems we aim to challenge. Additionally, we introduced a bold blue into the color scheme, symbolizing freedom and rebellion, further enhancing the campaign’s message of resistance against censorship.
